A Book Review by Denis Kosov
The Pursuit of God, by A.W. Tozer, is a very interesting book. The author writes this book about his personal journey of the pursuit of God. It is a book that is not the easiest to understand because of the vocabulary used. However, if you carefully read it and research the meaning of words, it becomes easier to understand. The book is not a very long book in substance but it has a very deep message. Here are just a few thoughts that I liked in this book.
First of all, God is a person. In His nature He thinks, wills, enjoys, feels, loves, desires, and suffers just like any other person. God wants to be known by us. He wants us to pursue and know Him. He longs for us to seek Him and have a personal relationship with Him.
Secondly, God does not want us to pursue anything else. For example earthly treasures. It is hard to pursue God if there is something else taking up room in our heart and mind. An example that A.W. Tozer used was about Abraham and Isaac. Abraham waited for a long time before he had his first child. He loved him very much. However, God wanted to see Abraham love Him more than his son. God tested Abraham to see how much he loves Him. He told Abraham to bring Isaac and give him to God as a sacrifice. Abraham passed this test. Just like Abraham proved that he loved God more than his son, God wants us to love Him more than anything else.
Lastly, this book shows us how important it is to pursue God and teaches us how to put it into practice. My favorite aspect of the book is that at the end of every chapter A.W. Tozer writes a prayer. With his prayers he demonstrates how important it is to pray while pursuing God. Prayer is an avenue to pursue God through. The writer shows us examples of how to pray when pursuing God.
These are just a few thoughts and examples from the book. There is so much more to it. If you are looking for a good book to read, to help you in your spiritual growth, and to help you grow in a closer relationship with God, this is a good book for you. It is a very deep and thoughtful book. Although It is only 128 pages. If I was to rate this book, I would give it a 10 out of 10. I enjoyed it a lot and learned a lot for myself. I recommend this book to anyone.
“O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, `Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.' Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus' name, Amen.”
